Gum Treatment at Picasso Dental Clinic

Picasso Dental Clinic provides periodontal (gum) treatment and related surgical procedures at our clinic at 16 Chau Long, Ba Dinh, Hanoi, Vietnam. Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Our dentists treat gum disease at all stages — from early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis — and perform gum-related surgical procedures including frenectomies and gummy smile correction.

Gum and Periodontal Treatments

Deep Scaling and Root Planing

The primary non-surgical treatment for gum disease (periodontitis). Deep scaling removes tartar and bacteria from below the gum line, while root planing smooths the root surfaces to remove toxin-laden cementum and encourage the gum tissue to reattach to the tooth. Performed under local anaesthetic, typically completed in two to four appointments covering different quadrants of the mouth.

Following treatment, most patients require a 3-month periodontal maintenance cycle rather than standard 6-month checkups, to prevent recurrence. Picasso Dental Clinic provides full periodontal documentation for patients who return home for maintenance.

Deep Scaling and Root Planing

Frenectomy

Surgical release of a restrictive labial frenum (lip tie) or lingual frenum (tongue tie). A tight or low-attaching frenum can cause gum recession, gaps between front teeth (diastema), restricted tongue movement, or speech difficulties. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and typically heals within one to two weeks.

Frenectomy

Gummy Smile Surgery (Gingivectomy / Crown Lengthening)

If excess gum tissue covers too much of the tooth surface, a surgical procedure to recontour the gum line can expose more tooth structure and create a balanced, aesthetically pleasing smile. The procedure is also used as crown lengthening to expose sufficient tooth structure for crown placement on short or severely broken-down teeth.

Gummy Smile Surgery

Occlusal Adjustments

Adjustments to the bite to correct uneven tooth contacts that contribute to gum recession, tooth mobility, or jaw joint problems. Excess occlusal forces on individual teeth can accelerate bone loss in patients with existing gum disease. Occlusal therapy is often combined with periodontal treatment for comprehensive management.

Occlusal Adjustments

Recognising Gum Disease

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Common signs include:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth (recession)
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Pain when chewing

If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule an examination before your departure if you are planning a dental tourism trip — gum disease is best treated before cosmetic or implant procedures.

7 Signs of Gum Disease You May Not Know

Gum Health Before Implants and Cosmetic Treatment

Active gum disease must be treated and resolved before dental implants, veneers, or orthodontic treatment can begin. Bacteria in periodontal pockets increase the risk of implant failure and compromise the longevity of cosmetic restorations. A periodontal assessment is included in every comprehensive examination at Picasso Dental Clinic.
