Misinformation about dental implants is extraordinarily widespread — and it has real consequences. Every week, patients arrive at Serenity International Dental Clinic in Hanoi having delayed treatment for years because of something they read online or heard from a friend. Some of these patients now require bone grafting that could have been avoided. Others have been living with removable dentures far longer than necessary.

The nine myths below are the ones our specialists encounter most often. Each one is addressed with the clinical evidence, not reassurance. If you are weighing your options and want accurate cost information, our dental costs guide and overview of dental work in Vietnam are good starting points.

1. Implants Are Painful

The truth: Most patients describe implant surgery as less uncomfortable than a tooth extraction.

Implant placement is performed under local anaesthetic. The surgical site is completely numb during the procedure. What patients feel is pressure and vibration — not pain. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild and managed with over-the-counter ibuprofen or paracetamol.

The fear of implant surgery often stems from the idea that drilling into bone must be agonising. In practice, bone has fewer pain receptors than soft tissue. The recovery from a straightforward implant placement is usually three to five days of mild soreness. Sedation options are also available for anxious patients at all three Serenity International Dental Clinic locations.

2. Implants Look Fake

The truth: A well-made implant crown is indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

The visible part of an implant is a custom-made ceramic crown, fabricated to match the shade, shape, and translucency of your surrounding teeth. At Serenity International Dental Clinic, we use high-grade zirconia and lithium disilicate ceramics that reflect light the same way natural tooth enamel does.

The “fake” look associated with older or poorly made dental work comes from crowns that are too opaque, too uniform in colour, or poorly shaped. With modern CAD/CAM milling and experienced ceramicists, there is no reason an implant crown should look anything other than natural. See examples in our overview of dental implants.

3. You’re Too Old for Implants

The truth: There is no upper age limit for dental implants.

Implants have been successfully placed in patients in their 80s and 90s. What matters is bone quality and general health — not the number on your birth certificate. Older patients often have excellent bone density and are ideal implant candidates.

The only age restriction runs in the other direction: implants are not placed in patients whose jaws are still growing (typically under 18 for girls and under 20 for boys), because the bone position will shift as growth continues.

If you are an older patient with concerns about suitability, a consultation and CBCT scan will give a definitive answer.

4. Implants Require Special Maintenance

The truth: Implants are maintained exactly like natural teeth.

You brush them, floss around them, and visit your dentist for regular cleans. There are no special tablets, adhesives, soaking routines, or removal requirements. This is one of the qualities that makes implants so superior to dentures — they integrate into your normal daily routine.

Some patients use an interdental brush or water flosser around implant crowns, which is helpful but not mandatory. The most important maintenance factor is consistent professional cleaning to prevent peri-implant gum disease. More on long-term care can be found in our post on dental implant candidacy.

5. Implants Fail Frequently

The truth: Dental implants have a ten-year success rate consistently above 95% in the clinical literature.

Implant failure does occur — but it is uncommon in healthy, non-smoking patients treated at well-equipped clinics. Most failures happen in the first few months during osseointegration, and the primary risk factors are smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and poor oral hygiene — all of which are assessed before treatment at Serenity International Dental Clinic.

Long-term implant loss from bone disease is also preventable with regular professional maintenance. The lifetime failure narrative is not supported by the evidence for patients who follow aftercare guidelines. Our dedicated post on dental implant success rates explores the data in depth.

6. Implants Are Only for People Who’ve Lost All Their Teeth

The truth: Implants can replace a single tooth, two or three teeth, or a full arch.

The most common implant scenario is replacing one missing tooth — a single implant with a crown. This is preferable to a bridge in most cases because it does not require grinding down healthy adjacent teeth. Implants can also support implant-retained bridges for multiple missing teeth, or support a full-arch prosthesis via All-on-4 when most or all teeth are missing.

The range of applications is wide. Even patients with a complete set of teeth except one are excellent candidates. If you are comparing implants, bridges, and dentures, implants are worth serious consideration regardless of how many teeth are missing.

7. You Need to Wait Years After Extraction Before Getting an Implant

The truth: Immediate and early implant placement is routine in modern dentistry.

Traditional protocols required waiting six months after extraction for the socket to heal before placing an implant. Research over the past two decades has established that immediate placement (the same day as extraction) and early placement (four to eight weeks after extraction) produce equivalent or better outcomes in suitable cases.

Whether you are a candidate for immediate placement depends on the condition of the extraction site — specifically the absence of infection and the presence of adequate bone around the socket. This is assessed during your consultation. In many cases, Serenity International Dental Clinic can extract a failing tooth and place the implant in the same appointment, significantly shortening the overall treatment timeline.

8. Cheap Implants Work Just as Well

The truth: Not all implants are equal, and the difference matters over a lifetime.

Implants vary significantly in quality depending on the implant system, the titanium grade, surface treatment, and thread design. Established systems from manufacturers like Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem, and Dentium have decades of published clinical data supporting their outcomes. Unknown or counterfeit implant systems do not.

At Serenity International Dental Clinic, we use internationally certified implant systems. The cost savings of going to Vietnam versus Australia or the UK are not achieved by using inferior components — they come from lower operating costs, labour, and overheads. Patients can access the same premium implant brands at a fraction of the Western price. See a full comparison of costs and quality in our dental costs guide.

9. Getting Implants Abroad Is Risky

The truth: With the right clinic, dental tourism for implants is safe, predictable, and well-established.

The risk in dental tourism comes not from geography but from choosing a clinic without adequate credentials, imaging technology, sterilisation standards, or aftercare planning. Serenity International Dental Clinic operates to international standards — with CBCT scanning, digital workflow, trained implantologists, and a formal aftercare protocol for overseas patients.

Our Hanoi clinic at 16 Chau Long, Ba Dinh has treated patients from Australia, the UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, and across Europe — many of whom come specifically for implant treatment. We provide a detailed pre-departure treatment summary and communicate with patients’ home dentists as needed. The Bottom Line

Dental implants are not just for wealthy patients in Western cities. They are accessible, predictable, and life-changing — and the myths that surround them are largely outdated or simply wrong. If you have been putting off treatment because of something you heard, we would encourage you to get a proper consultation and let the clinical evidence guide your decision.
