7 Steps in the Dental Implant Process at Serenity Dental Vietnam
Understanding the implant process removes anxiety and sets realistic expectations. These 7 steps walk you through exactly what happens — from your first consultation to your permanent crown.

Dental implants have a reputation for complexity — and that reputation isn’t entirely undeserved. Unlike a filling or a crown, an implant involves multiple appointments across several months, and requires your body to cooperate in ways that other dental procedures don’t. But the process is far more predictable than most patients expect.
Here at Serenity International Dental Clinic, we walk every patient through each step before a single instrument is touched. Understanding what’s coming makes every stage easier — and ensures you’re genuinely prepared for treatment.
Here are the 7 steps in the standard dental implant process.
Step 1: Initial Consultation and CBCT Scan
Everything begins with a comprehensive consultation. Your dentist will review your medical history, examine your mouth and gums, and assess the site of the missing tooth. Then comes the critical step: a CBCT (cone beam CT) scan of your jaw.
The CBCT creates a three-dimensional map of your jawbone, showing exact bone density, bone height, the position of nerves, and the proximity of anatomical structures like the sinus. This data allows your implant surgeon to plan placement with millimetre precision — before any surgery begins.
After the scan, you’ll receive a full treatment plan including the implant brand, placement approach, timeline, and itemised costs. This is also when any prerequisite treatments (extractions, gum treatment, bone grafting) are identified.
Step 2: Treatment Planning and Implant Brand Selection
Not all implant systems suit all cases. Your surgeon will select the appropriate implant diameter, length, and connection type based on the CBCT data and the position of the tooth being replaced.
At Serenity Dental, we use internationally certified implant systems including Nobel Biocare and Straumann — brands with decades of clinical research, global support, and manufacturer warranties. We’ll explain exactly which system is recommended for your case and why.
For patients combining implants with a dental tourism trip, we coordinate all appointments to minimise travel. Read our complete dental tourism planning guide for a timeline overview.
Step 3: Extraction and/or Bone Grafting (If Required)
If the tooth being replaced is still present, it must be extracted before implant placement. In some cases, an implant can be placed immediately into a fresh extraction socket (immediate placement) — your surgeon will advise whether this is appropriate.
If there has been bone loss at the site — common when a tooth has been missing for more than 6–12 months — a bone graft may be required before or at the time of implant placement. The graft material (synthetic, from a bone bank, or occasionally from your own jaw) fills the deficient area and stimulates new bone growth over 3–6 months.
Not every patient needs a graft. The CBCT scan determines this clearly.
Step 4: Implant Placement Surgery
Implant placement is a surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia — and for anxious patients, sedation options are available. The procedure itself typically takes 30–90 minutes for a single implant.
Your surgeon makes a small incision in the gum, prepares a precise channel in the bone using a series of drills, and places the titanium implant post into the prepared site. The gum is then sutured closed over the implant (or a healing cap is placed, depending on the approach).
Most patients describe the procedure as feeling like pressure rather than pain. Post-operative discomfort is typically manageable with standard over-the-counter pain relief. Our team’s full aftercare guidance helps patients navigate the first month.
Step 5: Osseointegration — The Healing Phase
This is the most important step — and the one you can’t rush. Osseointegration is the biological process by which bone cells grow around and bond to the titanium implant surface, locking it permanently in place.
The timeline depends on bone density, systemic health, and implant location:
- Lower jaw (denser bone): typically 3–4 months
- Upper jaw (less dense): typically 4–6 months
- Grafted sites: may require 6+ months
During this period, a temporary crown or flipper may be worn for aesthetics and function. You’ll have a follow-up appointment at Serenity to monitor healing. International patients are guided through remote check-ins until they return for the next phase.
Step 6: Abutment Placement
Once osseointegration is confirmed, a small connector piece called the abutment is attached to the implant post. The abutment protrudes above the gum line and will serve as the foundation for the final crown.
In some cases, the abutment is placed at the same time as the implant (one-stage protocol). In others, a second minor procedure is required to expose the healed implant and connect the abutment (two-stage protocol). Your surgeon will determine which approach suits your anatomy.
After abutment placement, impressions (digital or traditional) are taken and sent to the dental laboratory for crown fabrication.
Step 7: Final Crown Fitting
The final step — and the most rewarding. Your custom-fabricated crown arrives from the laboratory, and your dentist checks the fit, colour, bite, and aesthetics before permanently cementing or screw-retaining it to the abutment.
At Serenity Dental, we use high-quality ceramic materials (zirconia or Emax) that closely replicate the translucency and colour of natural teeth. The final crown is designed to last 15–20+ years with proper care.
Your dentist will take a final set of X-rays to confirm crown seating and review aftercare — including what to eat in the weeks following surgery and how to maintain the implant long-term.
How Long Does the Full Process Take?
For straightforward cases with no grafting, the full implant process from consultation to final crown takes approximately 4–6 months. Cases requiring bone grafting may take 8–12 months.
For international dental tourists planning around travel:
- Visit 1 (3–5 days): Consultation, CBCT, extraction if needed, implant placement
- Healing phase (3–6 months): Managed remotely with Serenity’s support team
- Visit 2 (2–3 days): Abutment placement, impressions, crown fitting
